Our History

1951

Long Island Dentist, Alvin Goldhush, begins creating cabinets for his own business, founding Raygold Industries. In time, cabinetry becomes his full-time career.

1971

Raygold Industries' sales volume reaches $6 million, and is acquired by Boise Cascade.

1980

Boise Cascade Executives - Bill Brandt, Al Graber, Jeff Holcomb, and Don Mathis - purchase the company in a leveraged buyout. American Woodmark Corporation is born with 1,100 employees, and three manufacturing facilities.

1986

American Woodmark formulates successful relationships with big-box retailers and goes public. The company moves to a new corporate headquarters in Winchester, VA, and starts to operate a limited-product-line, high-inventory business model for rapid order fulfillment.

1989

Sensing the need for change, Bill Brandt outlines a plan to create a revolutionary shift to just-in-time manufacturing. A new brand is added and sales take off as these positive changes take effect.

2010

During the 2008 economic downturn, American Woodmark creates a plan that allows the company to thoughtfully navigate the recession, gain marketshare, and come out even stronger on the other side.

2017

RSI joins the team when acquired by American Woodmark. With a history for creating exceptional value for customers, a complementary suite of products, and compatible culture, RSI is a perfect match for American Woodmark. As the largest acquisition in industry history, 11 brands, and nearly 4,500 team members are added to American Woodmark.

2023

As part of American Woodmark, thousands of employees serve customers nationwide, with 19 manufacturing and distribution facilities.

2024

1951 Cabinetry is launched to better serve our distribution stakeholders providing service to builders and consumers alike.
